Also. We discussed our name, Bon Iver, and NPR (I am so lame) and I made her smile/kind of laugh which was not something I saw her do to anyone else or during her presentation. She read from Unfamiliar Fishes (which I haven’t read yet) and the Q&A was fun. One lady pressured her into being involved with present day Cherokees and she was obviously uncomfortable and was just like “uhhh I work with dead people.” She was not intimidating Gheanna!
Dave Eggers read from the new novel he’s writing, which was really exciting because he said it was only the second time he has. It sounds really good, about a man named Allen who works in manufacturing but all jobs are going overseas so he has to go to train them then his relationship with his daughter/ex-wife, which sounded scarily like conversations I’ve had with my dad about my mom. He read one line, though that was like “He tried to masturbate but failed” then was like “oh my god did I just read that out loud?” and got flustered for a moment. He also was sweating so much, even though it wasn’t hot. He was literally dripping.
Jennifer Egan read from Goon Squad, the first chapter (my favorite) and talked about her own experience with stolen wallets and I’m glad I went early to see her.
